What does Craft Beer actually mean?

Craft Beer Spoken Here Sign

It’s something we are all used to hearing but what puts the craft into craft beer?

There is no universal definition of craft beer in the UK. In the Unites States a craft brewer is defined as one that produces less than six million barrels of beer a year.  In the UK we have a long tradition of small batch “Real Ale” breweries, so defining by size isn’t appropriate here. (We will cover “real ale” in a future blog.)

Craft beer is known for having bolder, hoppier flavours and there is consistently a big emphasis on flavour and quality. It has a tendency to focus on higher ABVs and it is seen as being at the forefront of creativity. The craft beer scene is constantly evolving and experimenting, there is something for everyone’s tastes from the weird and wonderful to modern bitters, and with the near endless variety of ingredients and brewing techniques it means that the possibilities are limitless.

Craft beers are generally made in smaller batches. They tend to have distinctive flavours and are led by their hop character. The hops are generally newer styles from the US or New Zealand for example. There tends to be a big variety of styles and flavours but many of the most popular styles that have taken off overseas, for example in the United States, have their roots in the UK and follow traditional ale brewing methods and heritage.

Ultimately though it really relies entirely on an individual’s interpretation of the word.  “Craft” which to one beer drinker could be something totally different to another and different again for someone else.
