The Story: The Phantom was originally procured for the Navy but became a core part of the RAF when 6 Squadron was formed at Coningsby in 1969. A hugely versatile aircraft used in both close support and air defence interceptions. A Phantom still acts as gate guardian at RAF Coningsby
